There are very few places where adults can remain with something they don't yet understand. Usually we're asked to explain. To know what we're looking at. To become coherent. We begin to believe that understanding is the price of relationship. The Studio offers four weeks where none of that has to happen quite so quickly. People begin discovering something surprisingly simple: they don't have to know what something is before they can begin meeting it.
Every week we gather with simple materials already lying around our homes: paper, fabric, tape, found objects.
The Studio isn't about being given interesting things to do. It is about entering conditions that change as you participate in them. You make something, alter something, remove something, encounter something differently, and then decide what to do next without necessarily knowing what it means.
Nobody is trying to make impressive work, and nobody needs good ideas. Nobody needs to explain what they're experiencing before they're allowed to have it. The pace is slower than ordinary life. Slow enough for things that usually disappear to remain available a little longer.
The Studio creates situations in which familiar distinctions (object and story, thing and memory, finished and unfinished, intention and consequence, self and other) become difficult to maintain. Participants are not asked to resolve those distinctions. They are given enough material consequence to continue participating without resolving them.
I know how to compose the conditions, but I never know what they'll reveal. That's part of why I continue making this work.
People begin saying:
"The condition invited rebellion."
"I noticed the softness."
"I stopped questioning why I had the thing."
"I found myself wanting to change the condition."
"The condition invited play."
Explanation loses some of its urgency. Attention widens. Objects become harder to settle. People become less hurried. Somewhere along the way, they stop asking whether they're doing it correctly. They become curious instead.
